ANSWER ENGINE OPTIMIZATION · 2026 Updated: August 2026

What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Search is shifting from a list of links to a single AI-generated answer, and the brands named in that answer win. Answer Engine Optimization is how you become one of them. This guide explains what AEO is, how it differs from SEO, and what the evidence says actually gets a brand cited by AI.

Key Takeaways

  • Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand cited in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.
  • AEO differs from SEO: SEO wins ranking positions, AEO wins citations inside the answer itself.
  • AI answers overwhelmingly cite earned media. Muck Rack found 82 to 85 percent of AI citations come from earned coverage.
  • Buyers have already moved: G2 found 51 percent of B2B software buyers now start research with an AI chatbot more often than Google.
  • Brands with no credible coverage are largely invisible in AI answers, no matter how good their own website is.

What Answer Engine Optimization is

Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the practice of getting your brand named and cited in the answers that AI engines generate. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question in your category, those tools reply with a synthesised answer built from sources they trust. AEO is the work of becoming one of those trusted sources, so your brand appears in the answer rather than being left out of it.

Why AEO matters now

The shift is not theoretical, and the numbers are large. According to TechCrunch, OpenAI's ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users by 27 February 2026. Google's AI Overviews reached roughly 2 billion monthly users, per Sundar Pichai on the company's Q2 2025 earnings call.

More importantly, buyers have changed how they research. A March 2026 G2 survey of 1,076 buyers found 51 percent of B2B software buyers now begin research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29 percent in April 2025, and 71 percent rely on AI chatbots in some form. When half your buyers start with a machine that answers in names, being one of those names is no longer optional.

How AEO differs from SEO

SEO and AEO are related but not the same. SEO optimises to rank a page higher in a list of results. AEO optimises to be cited inside the AI-generated answer that increasingly sits above, or replaces, that list. You can rank well and still be absent from the AI answer, and you can be cited in the answer without holding the top organic position.

How AI engines decide who to cite

This is the part that surprises most marketers. AI engines do not primarily cite the brands with the best websites, they cite the brands the credible press has written about. A Muck Rack analysis of millions of links across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, published July 2025, found more than 95 percent of AI citations came from non-paid sources and around 85 percent from earned media. A follow-up in December 2025 put it at 94 percent non-paid and 82 percent earned media.

A peer-reviewed study reaches the same conclusion. Researchers at the University of Toronto (Chen, Wang, Chen and Koudas, "Generative Engine Optimization," arXiv, September 2025) found AI search engines show a systematic and overwhelming bias toward earned media over brand-owned and social content.

The practical consequence is stark. A brand with a polished website but no press coverage gives the AI almost nothing to cite. A brand that appears across recognised publications gives it plenty. One honest caveat: these studies establish correlation, not proof of cause, Ahrefs, which found brand web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility far more strongly than backlinks, states plainly that correlation is not causation. But the direction is consistent across every major study: the models lean on earned media.

Baden Bower gets brands cited in AI answers by placing them in the publications those engines trust, named and guaranteed before you pay.

How to actually do AEO

Earn coverage in cited publications

Because AI answers lean on earned media, the highest-leverage AEO move is getting genuine coverage in publications the engines already cite. This is exactly what Baden Bower's AI visibility work targets: placement in named, credible outlets that feed the answers, rather than hoping your own content gets noticed.

Structure your own content to be quotable

On your own site, write in clear, direct, answer-shaped language. Lead with the answer, use plain definitions, add FAQ sections, and make claims specific and verifiable with named sources. AI engines extract and cite content that is easy to lift as a clean, attributable answer.

Build consistent, verifiable authority

The more consistently your brand appears as a credible source across the web, the more the models treat you as one. Consistency and verifiability compound: each credible mention makes the next citation more likely.

If you want the fastest path, start where the engines already look. You can pick the specific outlets from the full publication list and target the ones that carry weight in your category.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of getting your brand cited in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Instead of ranking a page, the goal is to be named inside the answer itself.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO optimises to rank a page higher in a list of search results. AEO optimises to be cited inside the AI-generated answer that increasingly appears above or replaces that list. You can rank well yet be absent from the AI answer.

How do you get cited by AI answer engines?

AI engines overwhelmingly cite earned media. Muck Rack found 82 to 85 percent of AI citations come from earned coverage, so the strongest lever is genuine coverage in credible publications the engines already trust. Structuring your own content in clear, answer-shaped, verifiable language also helps.

Why is earned media important for AEO?

Multiple studies, including Muck Rack's 2025 analyses and a University of Toronto paper, find AI citations trace overwhelmingly to earned media rather than brand-owned or paid content. Brands with no press coverage give AI engines little to cite, so they are left out of the answers.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

Not replacing, but sitting alongside it and growing fast. With 51 percent of B2B buyers now starting research with an AI chatbot, being cited in the answer becomes as important as ranking beneath it. Most brands need both.
